It was a busy weekend for teams competing in the Southwest Zone Basketball Commission league. Action took place at the Southwest Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Egypt, Point Fortin. New Village Trendsetters have pushed out front already with two wins from as many matches.

In a low-scoring affair on Friday, Squaddys became their first victim, going down 56-39. The New Village squad returned on Sunday to whip Reservoir Hill Hilltops, 70-48. Kareem Prince emerged the top player in both matches, scoring 12 points in the opening match and returning against Hilltops to net 21. He was well supported in both affairs by Kerron Noel. He posted 11 against Hilltops and 14 on Sunday.

Veterans were no match for the Blazers unit as they went under 69-39. Led by a match-high 32 points from Kwame Edwards, the Gonzales-based team earned victory in its first match after leading 37-19 at the half.

Veterans attempted a comeback piloted by Raymond Joseph (21) in the third period, outscoring Blazers, 13-8, to lessen their deficit to 12 but it was not close to being enough. The Marines gave a better account of themselves, rebounding from their opening loss 68-56 to La Brea All Stars on Friday, to defeat SDA All Stars by an 11-point (69-58) margin.
