Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert has expressed satisfaction that yesterday's local government elections were generally crime-free.
According to the top cop, there were no reports of violent outbursts or serious crimes which would have marred yesterday's proceedings. "Everything was pretty quiet and we are generally pleased with that," Philbert said. "There were reports of no serious crimes to disturb the local government election." From as early as 4 am yesterday, police officers were out on the streets, keeping watch over the various polling stations. Soldiers also joined in the patrols.
Head of Northern Division, acting Senior Supt Stephen Ramsubhag, said there were no reports of serious crimes at the various polls, adding that the stations were manned by a full complement of officers. At Western Division, there were also no reports of serious crimes. Acting ASP Henry Dann said there was a full complement of officers at the polling stations to ensure the safety of voters.
Officers will be required to remain on duty until instructions have been given by the Police Commissioner to "stand down." After the election, police will still be conducting 24-hour patrols to ensure there are no incidents of post-election violence.
