Bank of Guyana Governor dies

Gov­er­nor of the Bank of Guyana, Lawrence Williams, died yes­ter­day af­ter a long bat­tle with can­cer.Williams, who was ap­point­ed to the po­si­tion in June 2005 spent al­most all his work­ing life in the Cen­tral Bank.In 1979, af­ter suc­cess­ful­ly com­plet­ing the Bach­e­lor of So­cial Sci­ences De­gree (man­age­ment), he joined the Bank of Guyana as an as­sis­tant prin­ci­pal in the Ex­change Con­trol De­part­ment and was re­spon­si­ble for im­ple­ment­ing and main­tain­ing the sys­tem for mon­i­tor­ing ex­ports and col­lec­tion of ex­port re­ceipts.

As Gov­er­nor of the Bank of Guyana, Williams was re­spon­si­ble for the over­all man­age­ment of the Bank of Guyana and was chair­man of the board of di­rec­tors, re­spon­si­ble for guid­ing the de­lib­er­a­tions of the board with a view to en­sur­ing the achieve­ment of the bank's prin­ci­pal ob­jec­tives of fos­ter­ing mon­e­tary sta­bil­i­ty and pro­mot­ing cred­it con­di­tions con­ducive to growth.
