The late prime minister George Chambers and labour leader Adrian Cola Rienzi are among three recipients of the nation's highest award, the Order of Trinidad and Tobago, for the country's golden jubilee. The third is T&T's second Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott. The awards are to be presented at a special ceremony at Queen's Hall, St Ann's today. Chambers served as prime minister from 1981 to 1986. He was appointed to the post by the late President Sir Ellis Clarke after his predecessor, Dr Eric Williams, died in office. Several journalists are listed among the more than 70 recipients of national awards. Among them are former T&T?Guardian editors-in-chief Therese Mills and Lennox Grant, and Guardian columnists Clevon Raphael and Dr Hamid Ghany. Mills was awarded the Chaconia Medal (Gold). Grant, Raphael, Phoolo Danny-Maharaj, John Babb and Sharmain Baboolal were awarded the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) while Shamoon Mohammed was awarded the Humming Bird Medal (Silver) for culture.

Calypsonian Bro Valentino (Emerald Phillip), calypsonian and chutney soca singer Samraj Jaimungal (Rikki Jai), show promoter William Munroe and Liseli Daaga (wife of Cultural Ambassador to Caricom Makandal Daaga) are among the recipients of the Humming Bird Medal (Gold). Medal-winning members of T&T's 2012 Olympic team are being awarded the Chaconia Medal (Gold). They are Lalonde Gordon, Marc Burns, Keston Bledman, Emmanuel Callender, Richard Thompson, Ade Alleyne-Forte, Jarrin Solomon and Deon Lendore. The Medal for the Development of Women (Gold) was awarded to Prof Rhoda Reddock and attorney Lynette Seebaran-Suite. Public Service Medal of Merit is to be awarded to 12 nationals including retired Chiefs of Defence Staff Brig Gen Roland Maunday and Brig Gen Carl Alphonso, Assistant Commissioner of Police Fitzroy Frederick, retired principal Ruby Thompson and educator Maureen Manchook.
