Yesterday's special siting of the House of Representatives was suspended for 24 minutes during the pre-tea session because smoke was seen coming from a light bulb in the chamber. It was bought to the attention of the Speaker by Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley who was contributing to yesterday's debate on a motion to approve the first report of the Committee of Privileges. The motion, presented by the Leader of Government Business, Housing and the Environment Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal called for the adoption of the report. It was later amended by Tourism Minister Dr Rupert Griffith for former Prime Minister Patrick Manning to be suspended from the service of the House. But shortly after 3 pm the smoke was seen and an odour filled the chamber. Mark suspended the sitting while most MPs and members of the public gallery left the chamber. Staff at the Red House later checked the bulb and it was determined that the smoke was caused by an insect which came in contact with the bulb. The sitting resumed at about 3.40 pm.
