Artists Leona Fabien, Sherlann Peters and Lisa Hutchinson, will come together for the exhibition 3 Hearts 1 Mind at the Gallery at Fine Art, corner Rosalino and Warren Streets on June 29. A self taught artist, Sherlann Peters' commissioned work has appeared in the T&T Postal Corporation's stamp issue, for the International Year Commemorating the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition. Peters has designed and produced the statuette used by Gayelle TV for its Annual Independence Award Show and has been awarded by NYAC at the Top 20 Stars Of Tomorrow Awards for excellence and outstanding achievements in visual arts.
She has also produced work with Trinidad Art Society, The Power Generation Company of T&T and the National Carnival Commission to name a few. "While my work draws inspiration from everything around me, my main subject matter tends to be more of a nostalgic nature. My work illustrates the stories of a passing generation prosperous with culture while it enlightens future generations of our wealthy historical past." Art and Design teacher, Fabien enjoys all of the processes involved in the act of creating. She is often inspired by both her natural and man-made environment–local flora and architectural motifs. This exhibition presents works of art that were created out of pure joy and the need to paint even if it means simply creating a pretty picture. Colour and shape play a vital role in creating the various moods that her paintings express and she strives to create a sense of balance and unity in her pieces.
Fabien studied Visual Arts at The Centre for the Creative and Festival Arts, UWI and was the recipient of numerous awards. She was awarded two Bursary Awards from the UWI Endowment and Development Fund for excelling in Art at the university for the academic year 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. She was then awarded the Eastman-Christensen Visual Arts Award for excelling in Art in her second year at the university. Fabien has exhibited annually with the Women In Art Organisation. She has also exhibited in joint exhibitions at the Gallery 1234, Normandie, The National Museum and Art Gallery, The Central Bank, Bois Cano, Kapok Hotel, Southern Art Gallery and The Art Society of T&T. At present she teaches at Bishop Anstey High where she experiences on a daily basis what may be described as the intangible role that Art plays in the lives of her students.
Hutchinson is a passionate artist who specialises in organic abstract art. Her paintings reflect aspects of the natural environment and a love for anthuriums. Her images appear as slight distortions of this environment as she attempts to add a new visual image to the artscape of T&T. Hutchinson is known for her trademark bright colours, soft hues and clean, feminine lines. Each painting is seen as a journey or an evolution of emotion as it is being created due to the layering and depths that are used in each painting to engage its audience. Hutchinson studied art for a number of years both at secondary and tertiary level and achieved her BA in Visual Arts at The University of the West Indies. She believes that art is a gift and a talent that must be explored and she enjoys helping others explore that realm. She has done over 60 pieces of artwork over the course of her career as an artist. She credits the works of Georgia O'Keefe, Glen Roopchand as well as Carlisle Harris as having inspired her over the years. The exhibition runs at The Gallery at Fine Art until July 10.
