Alexander jumps to silver

Jumper Ayan­na Alexan­der cap­tured T&T's third medal at the 19th Com­mon­wealth Games yes­ter­day in New Del­hi, In­dia.

Alexan­der leaped 13.91 me­tres to se­cure the sil­ver medal in the Women's triple jump event at the Jawa­har­lal Nehru Sta­di­um.

The Cen­tral Amer­i­can and Caribbean (CAC) Games bronze medal­list, fin­ished be­hind Tre­cia Kaye Smith of Ja­maica, who record­ed a leap of 14.19 to take gold. Third was Tabia Charles of Cana­da with an ef­fort of 13.84 me­tres.

To­day, Alexan­der and her team­mate Rhon­da Watkins will look for suc­cess in the women's long jump event.Over on the track, quar­ter­mil­er Lalonde Gor­don clocked 46.33 sec­onds to fin­ish fourth in his heat in the men's 400m semi­fi­nals. His time was not good enough to earn him a "fastest los­er" sport in to­day's the fi­nal.

T&T has al­ready se­cured two bronze medals, thanks to Aaron Arm­strong in the men's 100m fi­nal and team of Roger Daniel and Rhod­ney Allen in the 50m Pis­tol Pair. T&T men and women teams went down again in the hock­ey com­pe­ti­tions at the Maj Dhyan Chand Na­tion­al Sta­di­um.

South Africa de­feat­ed T&T, 5-3 in the men's Pool B match with Gareth Carr scor­ing twice for the win­ners.For­ward Wayne Leg­erton scored a dou­ble and his cap­tain Kwand­wane Browne for the los­ing T&T out­fit. Cap­tain and strik­er Surinder Kaur scored four goals in In­dia's con­vinc­ing 7-0 win over last-placed T&T women's team which is yet to reg­is­ter a goal in its three match­es played.

The T&T unit lost to South Africa (12-0) and Aus­tralia (11-0).

At Talk­a­to­ra In­door Sta­di­um, Tariq Ab­dul Haqq de­feat­ed Pak­istani Meer Khan, in Su­per Heavy, to ad­vance to the quar­ter­fi­nal round. He will fight Joseph Park­er of New Zealand, to­mor­row.

An­oth­er lo­cal box­er Aaron Prince was not as suc­cess­ful in his wel­ter­weight di­vi­sion sec­ond round con­test, los­ing to In­dia's Dil­bag Singh, 11-3. T&T cy­cling team of Njisane Pil­lip, Christo­pher Sel­l­i­er and Thireef Smart, placed fifth in the men's team sprint on the fi­nal day of track cy­cling at the IG Sports Com­plex.

Emile Abra­ham was al­so ac­tive yes­ter­day, com­pet­ing in the men's 20-km scratch race fi­nal but he did not fin­ish the event. Young swim­mers Joshua McLeod (23.86), Caryle Blondell (24.18) and Cadell Lyons (24.30) fin­ished 18th, 22nd and 25th, re­spec­tive­ly, in the men's 50m freestyle heats at Dr SPM Aquat­ics Com­plex. The top 16 ad­vanced to the semi­fi­nal round.
