A Morvant man's steadfast faith in his religion has led his to forgive his son's killer.
Carlton Dyer said at exactly 7.34 am yesterday he glanced at his watch as he was alerted by a car horn by a visitor and seconds later he heard what sounded like someone knocking on galvanise.
Little did he know it was the sound of 10 gunshots aimed at his son, Christopher Dyer. The killer stood in wait in a corridor near Dyer's Red Hill Extension Trace hime and fired repeatedly as the victim exited the bathroom. He is the ninth person to be killed in the last six days.
Speaking with the media at the scene yesterday morning, Carlton Dyer, said he was at home lying on the bed when he heard the gunshots that killed his son.
Dyer said the time of the shooting was imprinted in his memory as he had a friend come visit him around the same time.
A masked man was seen fleeing the premises, which the couple shared with their three children.
Asked if he forgave the man who killed his son, Dyer said: "Yeah, you will feel sorry for that person who allowed the devil to take over their life to destroy lives that they didn't give. You can't escape from the master, so my duty is to make sure I keep my eyes on Jesus. The Lord said vengeance is His so I am not going to destroy my soul with hatred for that person, the righteous judge will deal with him when the time comes. Why should I strive to be vindictive and try to destroy that person that took my son's life, I might lose my own trying to take vengeance in my own hand."
He added that vengeance is God's while quoting a Biblical reference of Deuteronomy 32:35, and he would not stain his soul to hold malice towards anyone.
Carlton said Thursday was his son's first day back to work since the Christmas vacation and could not think of any reason why someone would want him dead. Police as well could not give a definitive reason for his killing.
He said his son's routine was work and home and he mostly kept to himself. He said his son never complained about being threatened. His message to the police, society and the killers was to put God first.
Residents who spoke with the T&T Guardian said Dyer was a ladies' man who had several girlfriends. They described Dyer was a "real cool one" who was quiet and kept to himself.
