Shakeem Mc Kay and Destiny Williams closed out day one as the top athletes of the National Gas Company (NGC) National Association Athletic Administrations (NAAA) Juvenile Games that took over the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, nabbing three gold medals each, yesterday.
In perfect weather for track and field, Mc Kay of Memphis Pioneers sent the small gathering which included T&T's first Olympic gold medal winner Hasely Crawford, into a frenzy sealing the top spot in the boys Under-14 100 metres final in a record-breaking time of 11.43 seconds. He bettered the previous record of 11.73 achieved by Timothy Frederick in 2014.
Mc Kay beat his club mate Daniel Qui into second in 11.74 and third was Kern Cedeno of Fyzabad Athletic Stars in 11.91, to bring to an end an exciting day of athletics. Earlier, he won the boy's U-14 high jump with a best effort of 1.55 metres and then partnered with Atiya Croal, Arianne Lucio and Qui, to cross first in the mixed U-14 4x100m relay event. The Memphis quartet clocked 48.00 to beat Cougars (48.86) and Abilene Wildcats (52.31) to the line in a race that had two boys and two girls competing in any order of the clubs' choosing.
On the field, there was no doubt as to who was the feature athlete as Williams picked up gold in three events. In the morning session, the Cougars athlete won the Girls U-14 Shot Put event with the best attempt of 8.35m. Later when Williams tackled the discus event, her toss of 18.05m got her the top spot on the podium and then an hour later she sealed gold in the javelin throw with a winning effort of 22.99m.
Lesanne Hodge was also special on the day, taking home two gold medals in the Girls U-10 age-group. The Memphis sprinter won the 60m, clocking 8.93 to finish ahead of Kaziah Phillip (Simplex) in 9.09 and Sianna Bishop (Burnley) in 9.20, respectively.
Hodge then joined with Melania Nanton, Tristan Alexander-Farina and Kelvin Cudjoe to win the U-10 mixed relay in 29.62. Second was Burnley (30.56) and Fyzabad Stars was third in 31.75.
Cougars was the favourite to repeat as winner as they held the record but dropped the baton in the second handover, resulting in them placing 13 in 35.56 in the timed event.
The Cougars team did get to celebrate victory in the U-12 Mixed 4x100m with sprinters Khaliff Danglade, Kyrell Thomas, Janika Jordan and Kianna Llewellyn combining to take the event in 53.65. Memphis and Abilene placed second and third in 53.82 and 55.19, respectively.
T&T's young track and field athletes will be back at it today in the second and final day of action in the meet also sponsored by Blue Waters and blink/bmobile.
