Renales on cusp of greatness

WALTER ALIBEY

She had a love for football but young Jada Renales didn't get back that response from the sport. Her habit though of attending training sessions with her father Derwin Renales, an ex-national badminton standout, paid huge dividends as she quickly became one of the country's most successful badminton players.

She has won all at stake as a junior player including a period of domination from 2009-2016 where she achieved six triple and two double crowns and has become a household name in the Caribbean, having placed second at numerous regional tournaments to date.

Now coached by her father, the Holy Cross College Sixth Form student is hopeful of more successes as she enters the fray as a senior next year. She will, for the last time as a junior, compete at the Solo Seniors at the end of the month and later contest the Suriname International in November to close off an illustrious career that began only when she realised her father's skills in the sport had been inherently bestowed upon her.

At 17 she remembers the moments of silently trying out the sport of badminton in the confines of her bedroom, after the more popular football, swimming and gymnastics couldn't earn her the admiration of the masses and successes as on the badminton courts.

In 2014 she became the youngest player to command a place on both the T&T junior and senior teams, despite falling short of copping the winning prize at the Carebaco Junior Championship in Jamaica, placing second among the Under-17 Girls and guiding her team to the silver medal and produced a similar string of performances at the same tournament in Santo Domingo, claiming runner-up spots in the Girls Singles and Doubles before securing bronze in the Mixed Doubles and silver in the Team event.
