It is fitting that at the height of the Carnival season Government has announced plans to reward two of this country's national icons for their contribution to culture.Calypso King of the World, the Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco), is to receive the Order of T&T, the highest recognition and honour which can be awarded to any citizen. In addition, the State will cover the medical expenses he incurred after he suffered a stroke last September and spent three months in a New York hospital.Veteran masman Peter Minshall has been given the deed for the government house in Federation Park where he has lived for many years.
These rewards, announced by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Wednesday, are in keeping with grants and honours that have been given to citizens who are worthy representations of national values and honour. The aim is to recognise and celebrate in a very tangible way the achievement through hard work, determination, tenacity and resilience which have helped put T&T on the map and made a significant and positive impact on national life.
