It is fit­ting that at the height of the Car­ni­val sea­son Gov­ern­ment has an­nounced plans to re­ward two of this coun­try's na­tion­al icons for their con­tri­bu­tion to cul­ture.Ca­lyp­so King of the World, the Mighty Spar­row (Slinger Fran­cis­co), is to re­ceive the Or­der of T&T, the high­est recog­ni­tion and ho­n­our which can be award­ed to any cit­i­zen. In ad­di­tion, the State will cov­er the med­ical ex­pens­es he in­curred af­ter he suf­fered a stroke last Sep­tem­ber and spent three months in a New York hos­pi­tal.Vet­er­an mas­man Pe­ter Min­shall has been giv­en the deed for the gov­ern­ment house in Fed­er­a­tion Park where he has lived for many years.

These re­wards, an­nounced by Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar on Wednes­day, are in keep­ing with grants and ho­n­ours that have been giv­en to cit­i­zens who are wor­thy rep­re­sen­ta­tions of na­tion­al val­ues and ho­n­our. The aim is to recog­nise and cel­e­brate in a very tan­gi­ble way the achieve­ment through hard work, de­ter­mi­na­tion, tenac­i­ty and re­silience which have helped put T&T on the map and made a sig­nif­i­cant and pos­i­tive im­pact on na­tion­al life.
