Exousia means authority and one can feel the power of the mas band once you step into the mas camp in Port-of-Spain. The exhibition room features vibrant colours with costumes that tell stories of heritage and creativity in a dazzling display of cultural celebration.
Still new in the Carnival arena, Exousia Mas launched in 2019 but has been able to embrace the spirit of carnival and forge connections that last a lifetime. Bandleader of Exousia Mas Colin Providence says “The band is not just another bikini and beads band,” but notes that every costume proudly showcases the essence of its origins and tells a story that spans generations.
He highlights the thought process and creativity that goes into producing costumes that are not only visually appealing but sustainable and affordable.
Providence said after months of meetings and brainstorming, the team was able to finalise a Carnival theme. Then comes the production period, where skilled designers and craftsmen bring their vision to fruition. He said Exousia Mas weaves together tradition, creativity and a sense of community while embracing the dynamism of the present in their portrayals.
This year the band presents costumes based on the theme Safari, combining intricate beadwork, feathers, sequins, and vibrant fabrics. With six sections, the design team meticulously crafts each costume, incorporating intricate details that mirror the patterns, colours, and textures found in nature. However, Providence added that some elements of creative design were included in the portrayal blending the uninhibited spirit of carnival with the spirit of Africa.
Despite the concerns raised by Carnival lovers about crime and safety, Providence said the band has retained most of its customers and gained some new ones. He noted, however, the concerns and has included safety measures for his masqueraders to enjoy the revelry while enjoying peace of mind.
Providence indicated that the Exousia experience on Carnival Monday and Tuesday will create lasting memories of a shared encounter that celebrates the wonders and the joy of Carnival. He said in the end, “Me, my team and my masqueraders become family and we celebrate as a family.”
Beyond the glittering costumes and lively parades, Exousia Mas is deeply rooted in community engagement. The band actively participates in charitable initiatives, distributing hampers to needy families during the Christmas season. The band also gives back to the community by inviting students to participate in the mas-making process.
Exousia Mas is appealing to all to join in the spectacle and revel in the magic of Carnival.
Providence said the Exousia experience was not just a visual feast, but “a shared encounter that transcends boundaries, uniting participants and spectators alike to celebrate life, diversity and togetherness.” Providence said the band, which continues to evolve, wants to create an immersive experience that captivates the senses and leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of all who participate.
