Astra Winchester Creations Pandemic has won Plymouth J’Ouvert 2022. The results were announced on Sunday night by the Tobago Festivals Commission.
Eleven bands crossed two judging points at the venue on Saturday morning.
Aneta Winchester also copped the titles of Queen of the Band, the Couples category and the Individual title.
Speaking with Guardian Media on Monday Astra Winchester said she was elated, “I feel very, very happy to know that this is my fourth consecutive win. I am very proud of this accomplishment. It was a lot of hard work but I know that hard work and dedication yields success. I experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. I got first-hand experience of what it was all about. I knew that it would be a good theme and that I could do so much with it. I told myself that one day I will portray the coronavirus as one of my themes and so, I decided to make that my presentation for Plymouth J’Ouvert 2022.
“From the very start my players told me that they loved my concept this year. Everyone kept telling me “I love it”, “Astra yuh come real good with that theme.” Players had a hard time deciding which section to play in because they told me the three sections I presented were so nice. When the results were released, players were calling me, congratulating me before I could even share the news of my victory. They were all so happy to know that we did it once again.

“My band will be taking part in October Carnival with the same theme “Pandemic.” However, I will be increasing section 3 which depicts the countries affected by the coronavirus, eight countries were presented for Plymouth J’Ouvert. However, for October Carnival about 15 countries will be presented. The band will most likely take part in the night mas and/or J’Ouvert.”
The three sections of the band included Doctors and Nurses who fought hard to save the lives of those infected. Death, those who died from the coronavirus and Countries affected by the coronavirus.
Hundreds flocked to the seaside village for the celebrations. Bands, revellers and persons seeking to free-up after two years of closure because of the COVID-19 pandemic took to the streets and followed the beat of the music truck along Arnos Vale Road. The event featured a taste of traditional devil, mud and Apache mas.
First to cross the stage before 5 am was City Raw Jabs with their presentation of D On Told Story of the Saints that featured devils coated in old motorcar oil and using a flambeaux to spit out a kerosene fireball. Re Promotions presentation Apache Shades of Sunset was amongst the larger bands. Apache featured Chief Curry as the King of the band along with his queen Pocahontas.
John Arnold, the CEO of the Tobago Festivals Commission, told Guardian Media that he was pleased with how the event was managed. However Arnold said he was expecting much larger bands to participate.
