Today, September 10, around the globe we recognise World Suicide Prevention Day 2019. This day comes with much sadness for many, thinking about the ones that have been lost to mental illness which is prevalent in today’s society. It is important to make yourself aware of the warning signs.
According to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE), here are a few warning signs you can look out for:
Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself;
Looking for a way to kill oneself;
Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose;
Talking about feeling trapped or being in unbearable pain;
Talking about being a burden to others;
Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs;
Acting anxious, agitated, or reckless;
Sleeping too little or too much;
Withdrawing or feeling isolated;
Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge; and
Displaying extreme mood swings.
If you notice any of these signs, the best thing to do is ACT—Acknowledge, Care and Treatment. According to stopasuicide.org here are the steps that you can take.
ACKNOWLEDGE
Do take it seriously. If you recognise warning signs in your friend or loved one, it is very important to take them seriously. In fact, the majority of people who die by suicide gave some indication of their intention to those close to them.
CARE
Do voice your concern. Take the initiative to ask what is troubling your friend or loved one, and attempt to overcome any reluctance on their part to talk about it.
TREATMENT
Do get professional help immediately. If your friend or loved one is exhibiting any suicidal warning signs, assist them by contacting a mental health professional, or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
