Regional mobile operator, Digicel, has reported that its revenues increased by 16 per cent year on year to US$1.24 billion for the six months ended September 30, 2011. In a statement on Friday, Digicel Group Limited-which comprises 30 markets in the Caribbean, El Salvador and the Pacific-reported that its EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) was up 15 per cent year on year to US$524 million for the six-month period with the most recent quarter contributing US$270 million EBITDA. Asked in a follow-up e-mail whether there was any chance of getting Digicel's net profit information for the period, the company's head of Group Public Relations, Antonia Graham, replied: "Apologies, but we will not be disclosing that."
On November 3, Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), which operates in many of the same Caribbean markets as Digicel, reported a 24 per cent increase in revenue to US$1.44 billion for the six months ending September 30, and EBITDA that was higher by 4 per cent to US$443 million during the same period. CWC reported net profit of US$108 million in the six-month period, which represented a 31 per cent decline. Digicel said its number of subscribers had increased by 14 per cent to 11.1 million across Digicel's 30 markets worldwide. "Haiti in particular experienced rapid growth adding 830,000 new subscribers in the first six months of the financial year. Revenue earned from value-added-services like web browsing and messaging, was up 47 per cent year on year, helped by strong demand for smartphones," said the mobile operator.
