Unemployment rate drops to 3.2 per cent

T&T's un­em­ploy­ment rate stood at 3.2 per cent in the sec­ond quar­ter of the year, down from 3.6 per cent dur­ing the first quar­ter.

Da­ta col­lect­ed by the Cen­tral Sta­tis­ti­cal Of­fice in a Con­tin­u­ous Sam­ple Sur­vey of Pop­u­la­tion dur­ing April-June 2015 al­so showed that from a gen­der per­spec­tive, the un­em­ploy­ment rate among males de­creased from 2.9 per cent to 2.3 per cent, while for fe­males it in­creased from 4.4 per cent to 4.5 per cent.

Com­pared to the sim­i­lar quar­ter in 2014, the over­all un­em­ploy­ment rate de­creased from 3.5 per cent to 3.2 per cent with the male un­em­ploy­ment rate de­creas­ing from 3 per cent to 2.3 per cent and the fe­male un­em­ploy­ment rate in­creas­ing from 4.1 per cent to 4.4 per cent.

At the end of the sec­ond quar­ter, T&T's labour force reg­is­tered 649,100 per­sons.

This was an in­crease of 3,100 or 0.5 per cent when com­pared to the first quar­ter.

This in­crease was re­flect­ed among males which rose by 2,400 or 0.6 per cent and fe­males in­creased by 700 or 0.3 per cent.

The over­all labour force par­tic­i­pa­tion rate in­creased to 61 per cent.

Com­pared with the cor­re­spond­ing quar­ter in 2014, it de­creased from 62 per cent to 61 per cent.

The sur­vey da­ta showed an in­crease of 5,800 or 0.9 per cent in the num­ber of per­sons with jobs.

The num­ber of em­ployed males in­creased by 4,800 or 1.3 per cent while the num­ber of em­ployed fe­males in­creased by 1,000 or 0.4 per cent.

When com­pared to the cor­re­spond­ing quar­ter a year ear­li­er, the da­ta showed a de­crease of 7600 or 1.2 per cent in the to­tal num­ber of em­ployed per­sons in T&T.
