Trinidad and Tobago's rate of inflation, which measures the percentage change in the all-items index, for the period August 2023 to August 2024 was 0.4 per cent, according to the Central Statistical Office (CSO).
This rate is less than that observed for the period August 2022 to August 2023 which was 4.0 per cent.
For the period August 2023 to August 2024, the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by an average of 1.5 per cent. Between, August 2022 and August 2024, the rate of inflation of food and non-alcoholic beverages was 7.18 per cent.
The CSO said the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased from 149.6 in July 2024 to 149.2 in August 2024, reflecting a decrease of 0.3%.
Contributing significantly to this decrease was the general downward movement in the prices of tomatoes, celery, pumpkin, bodi, green sweet peppers, fresh carite, eddoes, soya bean oil, mixed fresh seasoning and pimento.
However, the full impact of these price decreases were offset by the general increase in the prices of parboiled rice, fresh whole chicken, irish potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, eggs, white flour, dasheen, carrots and oranges. Price changes in this section for the month of August 2024 accounted for a net overall decrease of 0.1 points.
