Sex, smiles and videotape

Published: 21 Nov 2009

Well we reach. Forget the Millennium Development Goals, what we was really needing to take we to First World status was a sex video with a big-name celebrity.

logoYou could Google we own just like you could search for Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, R Kelly and all them others. So how come everybody vex, except the woman who star in it? The big questions about this scandal is not so much to do with sex, per se. She do what most of we does do—maybe a little bit more extreme, and some say a little better, but the basic act is something human beings and even fruit bats doing for all eternity. The questions that most concern me is the aftermath of the tapes. People was vex to see she smiling and hugging up she co-star boyfriend at Meiling show. Why? Let we take it back a little. Everybody know by now that former Miss T&T Anya Ayoung-Chee and she photographer boyfriend Wyatt Gallery was in some sex videos that get leak to the Internet a couple weeks ago. All kind of talk start when the files buss, about “how she could do that,” “what kind of self-respect she have,” “who leak the tapes” and “why they do she that.” And until she or he self talk about it, we don’t really know the truth, whether it was a publicity stunt or a genuine mistake, or somebody being malicious and putting she and she boyfriend private business out in the public.

I don’t have to ask why is such a scandal. Schadenfreude is a real thing—ent it have a word for it? “The pleasure derived from the misfortune of another” is the answers.com definition. Is a German word, but a universal concept. Plus, too, T&T is the world capital of porno searches, according to Google, the most popular Internet search engine in the world. Combine that and what you get? Instant scandal. Anya and Wyatt is not the first victims of this, mind you. A local singer was in some pictures making the rounds a few years back, and a journalist had he own five minutes of fame for he escapades that unfortunately get put online. Both of them now live their life normal. Anya going to get the same treatment? We go forget a woman’s sexual “misconduct” as easy as we forget a man’s? I say misconduct in quotes because I not convinced the girl do anything wrong. Your morals in your bedroom is your business, and I will give she the benefit of the doubt and assume what she was doing was private and consensual. The real villain of the piece in my mind is the person who leak the videos, whether for money, bad mind or idleness.

They should find that person and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. But now that it out there, people begging for she to apologise. One blog, 5 am at Mango Media Caribbean, compare it to a Jamaican dancehall singer name Lisa Hype who had some sex pictures leaked recently. Lisa Hype put out a apology, not for the act but for the fact that people see it. The blog ask, “Should public figures apologise for ‘offensive’ private acts committed in private spaces that are not illegal and do not harm anyone? Yes, they should. I think you do it first and then you get on with life.” Lisa Hype say in she apology, “I would like to apologise specifically to all my female fans who might be disappointed to see me in this light. However, I don’t apologise for the act itself because it was done with a man that I truly and deeply love and respect, and it was done in the privacy of my bedroom. I did it, so what? “I would also like to apologise to my family who are truly and deeply hurt by the dissemination of the photo all over the Internet and the media.”

Then it have them who ponging Anya for the things she do in the video because she not married to the people she do them with. Really? Double standards alive and well if people criticising she for having premarital sex. Is not no puritanical society we living in; birth rates does shoot up nine months after Carnival every year. If you want to talk about sex, talk about safer sex and HIV risk-reduction, and empowering young women especially to be smart about and in charge of their own sex lives. If you want to talk about the videos, tell them young people it have nothing like a secure file when it come to that, so don’t put their business on no camera.

These things will come out, and when they come out they doesn’t go away, ever. Ask Vanessa Williams. She pose for some pictures and they publish them in Penthouse in 1984 and you could still find them online now. And that was before it had Internet. Vanessa Williams is a good name to call, though. She hold she head up through that scandal and went on to have a big career as a singer and actor. Nobody doesn’t study them pictures now. I feeling it for Anya because is not a nice thing to have yourself all open in the public like that, but at the same time I hoping we could let the girl live she life. Or we go hound she down for having a different morality than we own?
