This photograph was taken on the morning of June 29. It shows a truck on a flat, open tray next to the main road in Pt Lisas. The tray is propped-up by a crude arrangement of pieces of wood. This is a most dangerous situation and it is a clear and present danger to life and limb.
One shower of rain could cause the blocks to sink and the truck would fall unto the vehicles using the main road. A mild earthquake could cause it to tumble. A vehicle could run into it, causing a minor accident to become a major tragedy when the truck falls on it. Thousands of people travel alongside this death trap every day.
As a concerned citizen, a month ago I called the company that is responsible for this arrangement and asked that it be removed. No action. Three weeks ago I called the Couva police and reported the matter. They promised to deal with it. No action. Last week I called the Couva police again and asked them to deal with it. No action yet.
This is part of the reason that we are a lawless society. Somebody does something as foolish as this in the full glare of the public and it is allowed to remain. The police seem powerless. But if this truck tumbles onto the main road and kills several people, we would see a lot of crocodile tears.
