This pho­to­graph was tak­en on the morn­ing of June 29. It shows a truck on a flat, open tray next to the main road in Pt Lisas. The tray is propped-up by a crude arrange­ment of pieces of wood. This is a most dan­ger­ous sit­u­a­tion and it is a clear and present dan­ger to life and limb.

One show­er of rain could cause the blocks to sink and the truck would fall un­to the ve­hi­cles us­ing the main road. A mild earth­quake could cause it to tum­ble. A ve­hi­cle could run in­to it, caus­ing a mi­nor ac­ci­dent to be­come a ma­jor tragedy when the truck falls on it. Thou­sands of peo­ple trav­el along­side this death trap every day.

As a con­cerned cit­i­zen, a month ago I called the com­pa­ny that is re­spon­si­ble for this arrange­ment and asked that it be re­moved. No ac­tion. Three weeks ago I called the Cou­va po­lice and re­port­ed the mat­ter. They promised to deal with it. No ac­tion. Last week I called the Cou­va po­lice again and asked them to deal with it. No ac­tion yet.

This is part of the rea­son that we are a law­less so­ci­ety. Some­body does some­thing as fool­ish as this in the full glare of the pub­lic and it is al­lowed to re­main. The po­lice seem pow­er­less. But if this truck tum­bles on­to the main road and kills sev­er­al peo­ple, we would see a lot of croc­o­dile tears.
