This is in response to the many statements being made by newspaper columnists and radio and television show hosts that the Commissioner of Police is in receipt of a monthly salary of $40,000. In the 89th report of the Salaries Review Commission, which was accepted in the House of Representatives on July 24, 2009, the monthly salary of the CoP was given as $31,250 and that of the deputy commissioners as$24,050.
It is possible that Parliament subsequently approved additional increases in the salaries of these officers, of which I am unaware.
It is interesting to note that at that sitting of the House of Representatives on July 24, 2009, the Parliament also agreed to "a wage freeze" for all others who fell under the purview of the Salaries Review Commission. These included the President of the republic, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, Members of Parliament and others who had received substantial increases in their salaries together with enhanced retirement benefits in the 80th report of the Salaries Review Commission, which was approved by Parliament on February 24, 2006.
May I draw to the attention of all interested readers the Parliament Web site ttparliament.org/publications for further information. May I also draw to their attention the contents of the Retiring Allowances (Legislative Services) Act No 4 of 2008. The boys and them quietly fix themselves up but are putting public servants on contract with no pension.
