I am very perplexed at the position taken by the PP Government that the guarantee to Clico investors given by the Central Bank and the PNM Government in February 2009 was not legal. It is alleged that there are some members of the then Opposition who have investments in Clico and would have received individual copies of the guarantee by post.
In any case, it was public knowledge. Should not the then Opposition have called on the Government to refute it and so would have done its duty in protecting or alerting members of the public who had invested in Clico? Even Winston Dookeran should have made his voice heard about the guarantee's authenticity. I think the neglect of duty (or is it ignorance?) by the then Opposition is an abominable shame. It should make a public apology.
