Rajin Dhanraj, aka Mr Gonah, from Cunupia is one of T&T's fast rising chutney stars. Dhanraj started singing at a very young age. When he started attending Cunupia High School he used to beat the desk or a bottle to get some sort of rhythm going. After school he began working as a watch vendor which inspired him to come up with the song Big Clock. That was when his career took off as that song earned him eighth place in last year's Chutney Monarch Finals.
His other song–Gonah–put him in first place for this year's Synergy Chutney Star contest which automatically qualified him for the 2009 NLCB Chutney Soca Monarch Finals where he intends to sing that song, as well as Nanny Say. Dhanraj has recorded songs with Maha, Emblem and Rishi Gayadeen Studios but is not recording at the moment as all his energy is being devoted to tonight's NLCB Chutney Soca Monarch Finals. Although he and Dil-e-Nadan's Raymond Ramnarine released a song a fortnight ago called The Player.
Although he currently works at Cyborg International Brands Dhanraj says that, "I will continue with my music and keep doing better as well as continue keeping our culture out there." To promote his music Dhanraj says he normally performs in clubs and other events throughout the country. His most recent appearance was at Sting nightclub, La Romaine, for the Chutney Unity event. He is also scheduled to perform at tonight's UNC Dollar Fete, and Chutney Glow.
Dhanraj said: "I thing chutney music is going down the drain. Some artistes have no respect for the art form. "As artistes we need to come together and let the music be where children, youths and older people can listen to without the vulgarity. The music should have positive vibes but with a party theme, if artistes do that then chutney would get far." He also said: "I would like to thank all my fans and supporters who have been with me through the years. I deeply appreciate all their support."
