Soca star Shurwayne Winchester is proving time and time again that he is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to performing and entertaining a crowd. The two-time Road March champ had patrons jumping, waving and some even misbehaving to a string of his hits at the picturesque Bois Cano Bistro and Bar, Kapok Hotel, in Maraval, on Saturday night.

The spacious open-air garden-style restaurant created the perfect ambience for the kick start of the restaurant's newest entertainment event–Bois Cano Live!–a series of mini concerts to be held at the venue. The concert, dubbed Look de Band Coming, was well attended and patrons had their palates well satisfied with the restaurant's signature cutters and cocktails and a complimentary glass of wine. Taking the stage at approximately 9.05, Winchester and his band You got right into it, delivering songs such as, I Wanna Make Love, Don't Stop and Carnival Please Stay. The artiste followed with some of his other tracks including, Dead or Alive, Make It Yours, (featuring reggae star Maxi Priest), Can't Wait and Get Out Of My Dreams, the tune that made Winchester a household name.

Showing off his versatility, Winchester then belted out some oldies too, much to the delight of the pumped-up crowd. His choices of Marvin Gaye's Mercy, Mercy Me, Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock and Black Stalin's Black Man Feeling To Party, certainly got the nod of approval from the patrons. At this point, some enthusiastic fans, who could no longer resist the urge to remain sitting, flocked to the front of the stage to let loose and show off their dance moves. Winchester's tribute to the late great King of Pop, Michael Jackson, added a special touch to his performance and the audience sang along, word for word, to MJ's hits, including, Got To Be Startin' Sumtin' and Will You Be There, just to name a few. Winchester's departure from the stage at 10 pm was met with chants of "We want more!" and "Don't stop till you get enough." The singer obliged and returned on stage to thrill the audience for a few minutes more, delivering his smash, Open D Gate. Special mention must be made of talented pannist Darryl Reid, who earlier in the evening gave a commendable performance and set the tone for what was to come.

More in store

Colleen Cameron, marketing co-ordinator at Kapok Hotel, said Winchester was chosen to kick off the mini concerts at the Caribbean-themed restaurant because he meshed well with its mellow and rootsy vibes. Cameron said, "This show was for us to gauge the response of the concert... and it was great.

"It was a success. We're hoping to make it a monthly event. We intend to pick artistes who will complement the restaurant and provide great entertainment to our guests."
