Tribute to Tito Lara—a soca parang gem
The Lara Brothers
Today Mr Muzik welcomes journalistic colleague Michelle Loubon to the world of song-writing. Her first effort—Tribute to Tito Lara—is fantastic. The song is well-researched and displays the ability of the bubbly, talented and hard-working Loubon. Tribute to Tito Lara is getting generous airplay—and deservedly so. Sung by the loveable lunatic Crazy, Tribute to Tito Lara will, in time, join the ranks of classic soca parang songs. It’s a credit to Loubon, who has made sure we do not forget the legend of parang Tito Lara, who died earlier this year. I hope to hear more from her.
I’m always thrilled when I hear an excellent soca parang song. It puts me in the mood to shake a leg. Tribute to Tito Lara straddles two worlds. It’s danceable, and if you’re the quiet type, it makes for good listening because of its well-constructed lines. Crazy’s other Christmas offering—White Bird—is different. It doesn’t have the usual rhythmic soca parang feel one associates with Crazy. The song is simply crazy, and will take some time to grow on listeners. I really hope it does. It makes you wonder if Crazy has drifted off to another planet, or went on a spiritual journey. Tribute to Tito Lara is on the Ma$tamind Christmas compilation now on sale at all record shops. Buy it.
