When Michael Gomez fell in love with hip-hop at the tender age of 11, he knew then that a future in the art-form was not only an option, it was his destiny. Hoping to carve his own niche in an industry which many believe is yet to achieve its full potential in T&T—Nem Red, as he’s called in the music arena, is taking his hustle seriously, sure that his time to shine is on the horizon. With his catchy and relatable tracks, such as Club Hopping and Replay, receiving considerable airplay, the 26-year-old is primed and ready to take his music to a new dimension with the August 28 launch of his second album—Welcome to the Future...The H1NEM1 Chronicles.

Something for everyone

The album, a compilation of 15 tracks, was mixed and mastered by Cody Gibbs and produced by Madmen and Kyllah Fam Productions, among others. Promising “something for everyone,” Nem Red says the album shows his growth, both as a writer and an artiste. “Compared to my first album, The Diary of Casper Gomez, you can definitely hear a growth. I have a lot of different songs with less profanity and more intelligent word play,” he says. Fans can also look forward to collaborations with some of T&T’s brightest hip hop artistes, such as Regazzi Gates and Chromatics, as well as with the UK's Alone Star.

Corporate side

With his one-year-old daughter, Aniela, the driving force behind his will to succeed, the executive director of the newly established Manhattan Lounge in San Juan, is also venturing into the corporate side of the entertainment industry. Also the co-chief executive officer of Grind House Corporate Label, Nem Red will launch his very own urban clothing line, Nem Wear, on August 28. Noting that local artistes do not always get the support of radio DJ’s, he says the time has come for musicians to take matters into their own hands. “We as artistes should not depend fully on DJ’s. We need to do more for ourselves...We have to start to think in a more professional way and people will pay attention.” Words of wisdom from this five-time freestyle hip hop champion, who vows to forever remain on the grind.
