When Island People launched its Carnival 2010 programme on Tuesday evening at IF House in Woodbrook, it seemed that most of the stars were in the house—Brian Lara, Anya Ayoung Chee, Umi Marcano, Patrice Roberts, Hans des Vignes, Denise Belfon, Rachel Price, TDC’s Jason Baptiste and Machel Montano’s mother, Liz—were there.

Hosted by Marlon Grant, the launch, titled Clear, featured greetings from IP director Derrick Lewis and Candace Imam; a costume display from Island People Mas’ C2K10 presentation, Kuchela; and, the launch of the Girl Power theme song—Attitude—performed by Denise “Saucy Wow” Belfon. On the evening, IP also launched its IF Loyalty Access Card, while Lewis spoke on the corporate social responsibility of IP, including its donation of $25,000 to the T&T Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TTSPCA), and assistance to the planning of the Port-of-Spain Rotary Club’s Chefs on the Avenue venture, which earned in excess of $20,000.

Amidst all the great food, good music and abundance of premium liquor, some sobering thoughts were evoked when economist Dr Patrick Antoine of the T&T Beverage Alliance expounded on the benefits of responsible drinking during the festive Christmas/Carnival season. Lewis also heaped praise on the folks at Arrive Alive, led by Kirk Waithe, for their sustained lobbying in the thrust towards making breathalyser legislation a reality.
