Advocates for Safe Parenthood: Improving Reproductive Equity (Aspire) held its Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) quiz 2010 finals and prize giving ceremony at the Normandie Hotel on October 9. The competition was made possible by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
In her address, executive director, Glennis Hyacenth, spoke of Aspire's important contribution to creating greater awareness of key health and family life issues among young people. Aspire's Chairperson, Lynette Seebaran Suite reiterated the call for age appropriate comprehensive sexuality education programme in schools. Altogether, six youth groups keenly contested the competition, with a mere one point separating the teams in the preliminary and semi final rounds.
Community Transforming Committee (CTC) and the St James Police Youth Club vied for the Errol Fabien challenge trophy before a packed audience of more than 130 young people. CTC of Dibe and Dondonald Hill in St James emerged winners, and walked away with two netbook computers, an all in printer, scanner and photocopier, and $300 worth of UTC units.
Special prizes were also awarded for the Team Spirit Award, won by Beausejour Community Council youth group, and the Most Valuable Team Member, which was won by Crystal Browne. All participants walked away with certificates of participation and individual gifts.
