Nickolai Salcedo, star of the recent award-winning film Hero, will be the main attraction at the next edition of Songshine on November 4th.
The singer/songwriter, musician, actor and visual artist, will perform his original songs in an unplugged set at the long-standing open mic concert series.
The event will take place at EAST YARD on Prince Street in Arima, a relaxed, open-air, multipurpose arts space. All performers, both seasoned and emerging, are welcome to participate in the open mic segment.
The show will be a homecoming of sorts for Salcedo, who says: “Songshine was actually where I had my first start as a performing musician. So it’s only fitting for me to come back here.”
“It’s always funny to come full circle.”
That first performance was as lead singer of the band Gyazette. After leading the group for seven years, including at Carifesta in Suriname, Salcedo got into acting, which he says led him to become a solo artiste.
As with Gyazette (whose music he wrote), Salcedo’s music is a blend of a multitude of influences with Calypso World Music. He says his new direction is one of “introspection and reflection with a message of change and growth”.
Songshine producer Gillian Moor, with her band Bush Tea, will also perform.
The November edition of Songshine will take place through partnership with Gold Sponsor Massy Foundation. The Foundation lends support to community organisations that work “to improve the quality of life for ...the local community and society at large”.
Songshine’s Arima edition has featured iconic talents such as Earl Lovelace, Ozy Merrique, Ruth Osman and Marge Blackman during the past year, while fostering a youthful community of support for the Arts.
