The trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) is hosting a movie night on June 7, from 7–9 pm, as part of WeBeat celebrations in St James. The venue is the St James Amphitheatre and admission is free. Founded in 2006 and presented by Flow, the ttff is an annual celebration of the best films from Trinidad & Tobago and the Caribbean, the Caribbean Diaspora, and from Latin American countries in the Caribbean Basin. The movies being shown are Africa Unite, a US-made documentary about a Bob Marley tribute concert in Ethiopia, and The Suspect, a dramatic short made by a Trinidadian director.
Part tribute concert and part travelogue, Africa Unite (2008) brings together the family of Robert Nesta Marley as they celebrate in music what would have been the reggae giant's 60th birthday. The movie is directed by Stephanie Black, and follows three generations of Marleys as they journey to the "fatherland," Ethiopia for the annual Africa Unite concert in Addis Ababa. The concert features music from the younger generation and rare footage of their legendary relative in action, as they promote his vision for a united Africa.
The Suspect, by director Leroy Smart, premiered in 2010 at the ttff. The action takes place on a bus, where a passenger begins to suspect that a crime is about to take place. The ttff receives leading sponsorship from RBC/RBTT and is supported by the Trinidad & Tobago Film Company, the National Gas Company and the Tourism Development Corporation.
