The Community Action Resource (CARe) held its annual sports and family day on August 3, at the Republic Bank Sports Facility Grounds, Barataria. CARe is an NGO, a supportive and advocacy group, which supports people who are affected by the Aids virus. It is the oldest organisation which was brought about 22 years ago, according to Kirk Langton, Chairman of CARe. Specially invited guests included Minister of Health Dr Fuad Khan; Ministry of Health internal communications manager Denise Scott, and stakeholders of Red Cross, UNAids, to name a few.
Minister Khan made his remarks on offering his services and assistance to CARe. This was communicated to members Langton, Joshua Wharwood, secretary of the board and David Soomarie, Coordinator of Programmes. Children from the Cyril Ross Home, supported by Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam, participated in the activities of the day. Activities included the 50 and 100 metre races, walk and wine race, balloon race, skipping relays, as well as other physical activities. Soomarie stated that this event, "provides a social avenue for fun and relaxation." It is an opportunity for support of each other, who shares the same position.
Supporters of the event included Republic Bank which provided the facility; Nigel R Khan Booksellers which contributed prizes for the second year; SM Jaleel with the sponsorship of Chubby, Fruta and Oasis drinks. CARe members prepared and presented their dishes for sharing at this event. Langton claims that children with Aids are occasionally stigmatised, because of their position with the virus. He added that these children attend several public schools where their condition is kept in confidence to prevent discrimination against them. Langton believes that the children's image must be protected and people should be more accepting and supportive of them. This annual celebration is dedicated in recognition of these special youths, who are deserving of acceptance and recognition, which CARe intends to continue supporting.
