Etienne Charles comes home for Creole Christmas

Her­ald­ed Trinida­di­an jazz trum­peter Eti­enne Charles re­turns home for a one-night-on­ly con­cert, Eti­enne Charles presents Cre­ole Christ­mas, at the Queen's Hall in St Ann's, on No­vem­ber 29.

Charles, 32, will be cel­e­brat­ing the re­lease of his new hol­i­day sea­son al­bum CD Cre­ole Christ­mas, a joy­ous al­bum fea­tur­ing the Christ­mas sea­son with clas­sics from the Caribbean, Amer­i­can and Eu­ro­pean hol­i­day song­books reimag­ined by Charles and his stel­lar en­sem­ble, fea­tur­ing jazz and folk mu­si­cians from around the globe.

The con­cert will fea­ture Venezue­lan cu­a­tro mas­ter Jorge Glem, Guade­lou­pean sax­o­phon­ist Jacques Schwarz-Bart, along­side Trinida­di­an favourites, Re­la­tor, Robert Munro, Clari­ta Ri­vas, David "Hap­py" Williams, Stan­ley Roach, and Charles' all-star Cre­ole Soul jazz band from the New York, a re­lease said.

On the al­bum, avail­able soon in T&T in stores and on­line, Charles and his su­perla­tive mu­si­cal guests per­form cov­ers of tra­di­tion­al Christ­mas songs and pop­u­lar hol­i­day favourites, parang and lo­cal sea­son­al songs, Amer­i­can gospel, vari­a­tions of se­lec­tions from Tchaikovsky's Christ­mas-themed Nut­crack­er Suite. These tap in­to a myr­i­ad of styles root­ed in Charles' Caribbean back­ground, his cre­ole soul. In­tel­li­gence and fun com­bine for a spir­it­ed cel­e­bra­tion of Christ­mas mu­sic for lo­cal au­di­ences of all ages.

The con­cert will be an ex­clu­sive live per­for­mance of this mu­sic in the Caribbean for 2015 and will con­tin­ue the high stan­dard of per­for­mance and mu­si­cian­ship by this pop­u­lar globe-trot­ting cul­tur­al icon. From Do­ha, Qatar to Ja­va, In­done­sia, from San Jos�, Cal­i­for­nia to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to T&T, Charles has re­ceived crit­i­cal ac­claim for his ex­cit­ing per­for­mances, thrilling com­po­si­tions and knack for con­nect­ing with au­di­ences world­wide. He has been hailed by the New York Times as "an au­teur" and by Jaz­zTimes mag­a­zine as "a dar­ing im­pro­vis­er." As a com­pos­er, arranger, record­ing artist and ed­u­ca­tor, Charles has been de­scribed as one of the most com­pelling and ex­cit­ing young jazz artistes on the scene.
