Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Orville London is warning of possible job loss in the tourism sector. However, he said, everything would be done to keep Tobago's economy afloat. London was speaking at the fourth annual Business and Economic Outlook Conference, themed, Towards Sustainable Economic Development: Revisiting Tobago's Development Agenda. At the conference, the view was expressed that the island was at a vulnerable point. London said the reality was that Tobago's economy was slow and facing challenging times. He said said among the hardest hit areas had been the hotel industry which would take sometime to get back on its feet.
He added: "The recovery in the tourism sector is not likely to improve in the short-term despite the efforts of the Tobago House of Assembly. "We are operating in a very challenging, highly competitive arena and therefore if you put into effect some policies now the effects are likely to be seen down the road." He said due to that issue there was not much the Tobago House of Assembly could do. He added that any measures to ensure the security of the economy must include the input of Tobagonians. Meanwhile, Secretary of Finance and Enterprise Development, D, Anslem London, said the THA was doing its part to minimise job loss in the public sector.
