Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner is expected to take a note to Cabinet next week to legalise the operations of PH taxis in specified circumstances. Warner confirmed this yesterday. The move is being met with strong objections from maxi-taxi operators across the country. Yesterday, several operators staged a demonstration outside the Office of the Prime Minister in St Clair. The maxi-taxi drivers were of the false opinion that the Cabinet was meeting at that office.
The Cabinet, however, met at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann's. Legislation to legalise the operations of the PH taxis is expected to be approved by the Cabinet and then taken to Parliament for debate and approval. The bill provides for the PH taxis to operate at selected areas in rural Trinidad. They are also expected to be legalised to transport commuters to certain Government housing developments across the country. The move to legalise the operations of selected PH taxis was welcomed by the President of the Auxillary Transport Association Gerard Whyms.
