Pan Trinbago has paid glowing tribute to the late Sir Ellis Clarke, recalling "his appearances on the streets of Port-of-Spain during J'Ouvert celebrations and his participation in a good Trini chip to a steelband."

Secretary of the steelband organisation, Richard Forteau, said in a statement: "We express our deepest condolences to his immediate family and close acquaintances. "Trinidad and Tobago has lost a great icon who has served in many roles from senior public servant, diplomat and Governor-General to being our first President.

"On behalf of the entire steelpan fraternity, we acknowledge, with thanks, the extent of Sir Ellis' contribution to the national life which spanned the economical to recreational." The statement continued: "It is incumbent upon our nation that we reflect on the very valuable contributions made by a real man, one who avoided the temptation of vanity but sought to share with others his God-given talents. "May the Good Lord receive Sir Ellis in glory."
