Member of Parliament for Diego Martin North East Colm Imbert is claiming that Deputy Commissioner of Police Jack Ewatski resigned as the chief of police for the Canadian state of Winnipeg under questionable circumstances.Speaking at Friday's sitting of the Lower House, Imbert said Ewatski retired five years before he was contractually due and did not have the best track record."...So he retires as Chief of Police in Winnipeg and he decides to take up a job in Trinidad and Tobago as deputy commissioner of police,"
Imbert said.Quoting a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) news story aired on January 3, 2007, the MP said while Ewatski will also be known for his "very aggressive stance" on street gangs his tenure will be better remembered for problems, such as his handling of "the Driskell matter." "Retired Winnipeg criminologist (Doug Skoog) said that under Ewatski's leadership, the Winnipeg Police Service was also accused of racism by aboriginal leaders, who said he did not do enough to improve trust between police and native people."
