'PP faces tough choices'

Act­ing prime min­is­ter Win­ston Dook­er­an says the Gov­ern­ment is mak­ing choic­es for the de­vel­op­ment of the coun­try's fu­ture and some­times the choic­es will be at odds with each oth­er as in the on­go­ing hous­ing ver­sus agri­cul­ture de­bate.When asked if the Gov­ern­ment owed a pub­lic apol­o­gy to the farm­ers in Mau­si­ca and Egypt Vil­lage whose crops were bull­dozed last Mon­day, Dook­er­an said: "I would be do­ing a dis­ser­vice to the di­a­logue that I want to pro­mote if I an­swer that ques­tion."The Fi­nance Min­is­ter was speak­ing about the 40 acres of crops which were de­stroyed by the HDC at two agri­cul­tur­al sites in the coun­try last Mon­day.

Dook­er­an spoke briefly to the me­dia dur­ing a break at yes­ter­day's Coali­tion in Pol­i­tics sym­po­sium at the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, St Au­gus­tine cam­pus.With changes, Dook­er­an said one would find con­flict­ing choic­es would have to be made in terms of the de­vel­op­ment of the fu­ture."And what we saw is a re­flec­tion of those con­flict­ing choic­es that na­tion must face."Dook­er­an said while the Gov­ern­ment has promised to com­pen­sate claims of the farm­ers who were af­fect­ed "we need to en­sure that the change for good gov­er­nance must con­tin­ue as we wit­ness the im­passe."
