The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is moving to evict police officer Daryl La Pierre, the owner of the four pit bulls that mauled a woman to death on Monday, from his HDC home at Flamboyant Crescent, Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas. HDC managing director Jearlean John said yesterday that La Pierre breached contractual obligations by keeping dogs on his compound. Neighbours claim La Pierre was breeding dangerous dogs at his home. John said the penalty for this breach is eviction.
She spoke with members of the media at the Fairfield/Matilda Estate, Princes Town, where she visited with Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal to speak with farmers occupying lands earmarked for housing. "Part of our contract with residents of (housing) estates states that you cannot have dogs," John said. She said in the past they had been policing the areas where these breaches were reportedly taking place. "We send out notices and we have moved to evict people on that basis, so basically the person who owns those dogs is in breach of his own contractual obligations," she said. Asked what was the penalty for this breach, John replied: "Eviction, simply eviction." On Monday morning, Denise Rackal, 46, an employee of Personal Safety and Security Training Limited, was on her way to work when several pit bulls belonging to La Pierre mauled her to death. La Pierre, who is assigned to the North Eastern Division Task Force, was not at home at the time. His wife, a nurse, had left the family's home to take the children to school. Residents claim this was not an isolated incident.
