Inappropriate searches conducted on students of the St Augustine Secondary School by security guards yesterday are engaging the attention of Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh. The minister mandated the Chief Education Officer Sharon Mangroo, as well as permanent secretary Maurice Suite, to investigate the matter and report to him today. In a release yesterday, the Ministry's Corporate Communications Division said Gopeesingh was informed of the situation which was triggered after an illegal substance was allegedly found on a student.
Other students were reportedly searched by security guards on the school compound. The minister was informed of various allegations surrounding the incident, chief among them claims the searches on the students were inappropriate. Gopeesingh has asked to be briefed in full on the matter and the findings of the investigation by today when he will make a relevant statement.
