$53m for students' laptops

Lead­ing Chi­nese com­put­er man­u­fac­tur­ing firm, Leno­vo, has re­ceived the con­tract to pro­vide ap­prox­i­mate­ly 17,300 lap­tops for stu­dents en­ter­ing Form One in Sep­tem­ber. The Gov­ern­ment will spend $53 mil­lion to pro­vide the lap­tops ac­cord­ing to Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Dr Tim Gopeesingh, who al­so said, the cost is $30 mil­lion less than last year. Gopeesingh as­sured that dis­tri­b­u­tion would be done in two weeks from mid-Sep­tem­ber and not two months like last year. He said the lap­tops cost US$460 each. He said a dig­i­tal por­tal will al­so be pur­chased to store in­for­ma­tion from the cur­ricu­lum for stu­dents' use.
