T&T successful cyclists, who participated in the Pan American Junior Cycling Championships in Guatemala, returned home to an appreciative reception at the Piarco International Airport, on Saturday. The squad, which impressively took Gold in the Men's Team Sprint and the Women's Team Sprint, as well as Jodi Goodridge's impressive bronze in the 500 Time Trial, exceeded expectations at the week-long event. The team was welcomed by Minister of Sport Anil Roberts, and president of the T&T Cycling Federation, along with family, well wishers and members of the media.
Noting the recent achievements and the resurgence of top cyclists in the country, Minister Roberts announced the commencement of drainage and ground works for the national velodrome in Couva. In addition to the modern 250m wood track for competition, Minister Roberts hinted the possibility of expanding the facility to include a 333m outdoor concrete track for training, given the condition and suitability of cycling facilities at Arima and San Fernando, over which the Ministry of Sport has no control or responsibility. He also announced that the upgrade of a cycling track at Urwin Park in Siparia, the hometown of Olympic-bound Njisane Phillip, will soon begin.
