On Thursday, the eve of the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, the British High Commission has organised a lamplit fun run from George Cabral Street to Fort George, St James culminating in a sensational fireworks display. The eyes of the world will be on London for the opening ceremony and the British High Commission in Port-of-Spain is hoping to generate its own version of the spectacular on Thursday evening.

Beginning at 6.45 pm, approximately 75 participants, including members of the diplomatic community; fans of the High Commission "UkinTT" Facebook page; TTOC & TTPC; sports clubs; T&T personalities; and International Inspiration young leaders including Olympic Torchbearer Shaquille Roberts, will take on the gruelling 3km route, lighting their way with solar lanterns and LED torches.

This "glowing procession" should be visible to the whole of Port-of-Spain as it makes its way to the summit of Fort George. Upon reaching Fort George, an invited crowd will welcome the runners with High Commissioner Arthur Snell leading the congratulations.

To mark their achievement, and to signal the beginning of more than a month of Olympic and Paralympic competition in London, a fireworks display will light up the skies of Port-of-Spain.

Ashmead Ghany, of Firepower Company, has put together a display inspired by the UK and the competition and has planned something "extra special" to treat those at the historic monument. The fireworks should be visible from anywhere in Port-of-Spain and to residents in Diego Martin and Westmoorings, and will begin at approximately 7.30 pm.

The High Commission thanks participating sponsors Coca Cola, bmobile, bpTT and Firepower Company, who are contributing to the event, which will be led by two Minis on display from Oxford Motors. The High Commission also thanks DeeTee International, a UK company, which has provided LED solar lanterns to light the way for the intrepid runners.
