Top honour for Chambers

The late prime min­is­ter George Cham­bers and labour leader Adri­an Co­la Rien­zi are among three re­cip­i­ents of the na­tion's high­est award, the Or­der of Trinidad and To­ba­go, for the coun­try's gold­en ju­bilee. The third is T&T's sec­ond Olympic gold medal­list Keshorn Wal­cott. The awards are to be pre­sent­ed at a spe­cial cer­e­mo­ny at Queen's Hall, St Ann's to­day. Cham­bers served as prime min­is­ter from 1981 to 1986. He was ap­point­ed to the post by the late Pres­i­dent Sir El­lis Clarke af­ter his pre­de­ces­sor, Dr Er­ic Williams, died in of­fice. Sev­er­al jour­nal­ists are list­ed among the more than 70 re­cip­i­ents of na­tion­al awards. Among them are for­mer T&T?Guardian ed­i­tors-in-chief Therese Mills and Lennox Grant, and Guardian colum­nists Clevon Raphael and Dr Hamid Ghany. Mills was award­ed the Cha­co­nia Medal (Gold). Grant, Raphael, Phoo­lo Dan­ny-Ma­haraj, John Babb and Shar­main Ba­boolal were award­ed the Hum­ming Bird Medal (Gold) while Shamoon Mo­hammed was award­ed the Hum­ming Bird Medal (Sil­ver) for cul­ture.

They are Lalonde Gor­don, Marc Burns, Ke­ston Bled­man, Em­manuel Cal­len­der, Richard Thomp­son, Ade Al­leyne-Forte, Jar­rin Solomon and De­on Lendore. The Medal for the De­vel­op­ment of Women (Gold) was award­ed to Prof Rho­da Red­dock and at­tor­ney Lynette See­baran-Suite. Pub­lic Ser­vice Medal of Mer­it is to be award­ed to 12 na­tion­als in­clud­ing re­tired Chiefs of De­fence Staff Brig Gen Roland Maun­day and Brig Gen Carl Alphon­so, As­sis­tant Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Fitzroy Fred­er­ick, re­tired prin­ci­pal Ru­by Thomp­son and ed­u­ca­tor Mau­reen Man­chook.
