All Caribbean Airlines flights into and out of Jamaica today have been cancelled, owing to the tropical storm warning which was issued yesterday, the airline said in a flight advisory on its Web site. A weather advisory posted yesterday to the Web site of the US National Hurricane Centre in Miami said a hurricane warning for Sandy was in effect for Jamaica.
The Hurricane Centre said yesterday afternoon that the centre of Sandy would move near or over Jamaica by this afternoon. The storm is expected to strengthen and become a hurricane today. It also said Sandy was expected to produce total rainfall amounts of six to 12 inches across Jamaica and a storm surge would raise water levels along the southern and eastern coast by as much as one to three feet above normal tide levels.
