Seven horses and their riders from the Police Mounted Branch were attacked by a swarm of bees on the Brian Lara Promenade, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. Assistant Superintendent of Police Allsop said he and his colleagues were on patrol on the promenade while members of the T&T Unified Teachers Association (TUTTA) were protesting against the slow pace of their salary negotiations.
Allsop said around 2.30 pm the police and their horses were attacked by the bees on Independence Square near St Vincent Street. He said the horses became agitated by the bee stings and their riders struggled to control them. The seven officers fled to safety with their horses, scattering in different directions.
Griffith, who said he could not see a horse in danger, stopped his car and grabbed hold of the animal by its reins. Thomas arrived shortly after and collected his horse. With him were PC Ross and Sgt Rampersad, who said they were stung on their faces and arms, and were going to seek medical attention.
