Chinese get $.5b contract to build Penal Campus

Chi­na Jiang­su In­ter­na­tion­al Eco­nom­ic pre­sent­ed a suc­cess­ful $499,513,631. 81 bid to win the con­tract­ing job for the UWI, South Cam­pus at Pe­nal, ac­cord­ing to in­for­ma­tion from Sci­ence and Tech­nol­o­gy Min­is­ter Fazal Karim.

His writ­ten re­ply on the is­sue was cir­cu­lat­ed in the Sen­ate on Tues­day in re­sponse to an Op­po­si­tion ques­tion. This stat­ed that the list of con­trac­tors who ten­dered for the project in­clud­ed Chi­na Jiang­su's bid, GlF Con­struc­tion Cor­po­ra­tion ($1,006,795,567.86,) Ki­er/Kee-Chanona Joint Ven­ture ($769,934,445.50) and UF­PO West In­dies De­vel­op­ment ($770,585,965.60).

The re­ply said the terms and con­di­tions of the con­tract were out­lined in the Con­di­tions of Con­tract for Plant and De­sign-Build, In­ter­na­tion­al Fed­er­a­tion of Con­sult­ing En­gi­neers (FIDIC) 1999 First Edi­tion. The com­mence­ment date of the project was set for Sep­tem­ber 12, and the com­ple­tion date is Feb­ru­ary 15, 2014.
