Police are investigating the death of a 57-year-old man, whose decomposing body was found floating in a river near his home, yesterday.

Police said shortly after 9 am, they received a report from a villager that a man's body was floating face down in a river off Old Bay Road, Maracas Bay. The officers arrived on the scene soon after and fished the body out of the water. The man was later identified as Soman Mangroo. Mangroo, originally from St Mary's Village, South Oropouche, moved into a house near to where his body was found, a little over a year ago.

His body was then taken to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where an autopsy will be performed later today. Police said Mangroo's body was in an advance stage of decomposition and did not appear to have any marks of violence."It appears that he had been in the river for a couple of days. All we know about him right now is that he was a heavy drinker," a senior police source said.

Homicide detectives believe that Mangroo may have fallen into the river while intoxicated and drowned, however, they said they would wait on the autopsy before classifying his death.Investigations are continuing.
