Power outage knocks out mobile networks

Hun­dreds of mo­bile cus­tomers lost ser­vice on both net­works this week­end ow­ing to an elec­tric­i­ty out­age, ac­cord­ing to the ser­vice providers bmo­bile and Dig­i­cel.Dig­i­cel T&T Ltd, chief ex­ec­u­tive, Sacha Thomp­son in a state­ment pub­lished in the me­dia said: "Ini­tial in­ves­ti­ga­tions sug­gest an 'un­prece­dent­ed' soft­ware fault as the cause of this out­age and our teams are al­ready im­ple­ment­ing changes to curb fu­ture risks to our net­work."Thomp­son as­sured that its en­gi­neers were dis­patched as soon as the is­sue was iden­ti­fied and "worked around the clock to re­store your ser­vices."

The com­pa­ny ad­mit­ted that the out­age would have re­sult­ed in an in­con­ve­nience to its cus­tomers.Re­gard­ing com­pen­sa­tion for its cus­tomers,Thomp­son said its cus­tomers should look out for a text mes­sage out­lin­ing the de­tails of com­pen­sa­tion. Re­fer­ring to its cor­po­rate clien­tele the com­pa­ny stat­ed that com­mu­ni­ca­tion would be done via email and its Ac­count Man­ag­er. For the mean­while, "as a ges­ture of good­will, Dig­i­cel is giv­ing all pre­paid cus­tomers $10 free cred­it and post­paid cus­tomers free min­utes and all da­ta cus­tomers free da­ta.

TSTT's act­ing head of Pub­lic Re­la­tions & Ex­ter­nal Af­fairs Graeme Suite, in a state­ment, said the com­pa­ny was work­ing on re­solv­ing the prob­lem."TSTT is work­ing to re­solve a tech­ni­cal is­sue that has been caus­ing in­ter­mit­tent ser­vice in­ter­rup­tions for some mo­bile cus­tomers. The com­pa­ny re­grets the in­con­ve­nience and as­sures cus­tomers every ef­fort is be­ing made to re­store nor­mal ser­vice in the short­est pos­si­ble time."
