Officers face mob in Beetham

Of­fi­cers at­tached to the Guard and Emer­gency Branch (GEB) were in­volved in a ri­ot in the Beetham Gar­dens, Port-of-Spain last night.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice re­ports there was a rob­bery in Rom­ki Ltd Whole­sale Es­tab­lish­ment in El So­cor­ro where a three tonne truck was filled to ca­pac­i­ty with food stocks.

The rob­bery oc­curred around 11.30 am on Sat­ur­day where two armed men en­tered the premis­es and tied up the guards on du­ty.

The rob­bers then left with thou­sands of dol­lars worth of goods.

Of­fi­cers from GEB re­ceived in­for­ma­tion yes­ter­day night that the truck was in the Beetham Gar­dens.

Act­ing on the in­for­ma­tion, the truck was lat­er dis­cov­ered in Phase Five, Hell Yard Beetham Gar­dens. An of­fi­cer on the scene said there was an at­tempt to con­ceal the truck un­der "old gal­va­nize and dry grass."

The of­fi­cers be­lieve the truck would have been stripped for scrap met­al.

When the of­fi­cers ar­rived on the scene, they were met with hos­til­i­ty and a ri­ot en­sued. How­ev­er, the of­fi­cer said none of the mob mem­bers car­ried any weapons.

There were no in­juries, no shots fired and no ar­rests were made dur­ing the ri­ot.

In­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the rob­bery is on­go­ing. The in­ves­ti­ga­tors are hav­ing the truck searched for fin­ger­prints.
