Tobago mom dies after C-Section

A woman has died at the Scar­bor­ough Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal af­ter giv­ing birth to a child by Cae­sare­an Sec­tion.Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, Rose Gor­don, 35, died af­ter de­liv­er­ing her ba­by girl at 34 weeks and five days in­to her preg­nan­cy on Old Year's Day (Jan­u­ary 31). She died on New Year's Day.

The T&T Guardian was told that fol­low­ing the C Sec­tion, Gor­don was tak­en back to the ma­ter­ni­ty ward but con­tin­ued to bleed pro­fuse­ly and was rushed to the the­atre for an emer­gency hys­terec­to­my, but sub­se­quent­ly died.The ba­by girl, who has not yet been named, re­mains in the Neona­tal In­ten­sive Care Unit at the hos­pi­tal.

Gor­don, who has a teenage daugh­ter, was prin­ci­pal of the Char­lot­teville Nurs­ery School.An au­top­sy is sched­uled to be per­formed to­day.The last time the Scar­bor­ough hos­pi­tal record­ed a ma­ter­nal death was 2014. Al­though in­ves­ti­gat­ed, de­tails of that in­ci­dent are yet to be re­leased.

In a press re­lease on the death yes­ter­day, the To­ba­go Re­gion­al Health Au­thor­i­ty de­scribed Gor­don as a "high risk pa­tient," but failed to give any ad­di­tion­al de­tails.

"The late moth­er, who was a high risk pa­tient, passed away from com­pli­ca­tions af­ter giv­ing birth de­spite con­cert­ed ef­forts by her med­ical team to en­sure the safe­ty of both the moth­er and ba­by," it said.

The re­lease said the TRHA had met with mem­bers of Gor­don's fam­i­ly and plans are in place to as­sist them dur­ing their time of be­reave­ment.Ef­forts to con­tact Sec­re­tary for Health and So­cial Ser­vices Clau­dia Groome Duke were un­suc­cess­ful yes­ter­day.
