Five people were killed in less than 24 hours yesterday, three of them in apparent gang warfare in Belmont, as gun-toting criminals continued their killing spree, sending the toll to ten for the year so far.

The bloodshed started on Wednesday night when a Valencia man was killed by an angry bandit during a home invasion, while residents found an unidentified man shot to death in El Socorro, San Juan.

Two people were also wounded in a shooting incident in St Joseph yesterday.

The murder at El Socorro occurred at about 2.15 pm at Jattan Trace but the victim was unidentified up to last night.

One of the men, identified as Matthew "Smeagol" Simmons, who police said was a gang leader, was a passenger in a car when he was killed. Police said he had earlier been at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates' Court.

The other man, who later succumbed to gunshot wounds at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, was identified as Oswald Bailey. Bailey, 24, was found lying on the roadway wearing a black ski mask.
